For this picture i used 4 different things. Superman, Zapdos from pokemon, Kid Gohan from Dragonball Z, and a picture of NYC for a backround. For each Character i resized then to fit with the backrounds size but checking the Show Bounding Box and draged it down to sizew with Shift to prevent distortion. Then i Added a Vector Maskand used both the Magic Wand and Lasso to capture the characters and used the Select>Inverse option to cature the backrounds and then delete it so everything but that chacters were remainded. then i used a new layer and painted it yellow under each Characters layer to look for any not completly deleted areas that might have been missed. I then Moved every character around so make it look better. Finally i used the Brightness/Contrast option to darken all of the characters to suit the backround a bit more.
